When I finished this book, I sat in the airport staring off into space with one word repeating through my mind. Incredible. Young has penned a world of intrigue that hooked me from the first sentence and refused to let me go. The characters were extremely well developed, and the main character effortlessly drew me in. I had no difficulty empathizing with her plights, terrors, confusions, and longings. I felt like I was right there with her, fighting to escape her living hell.
I have never liked books written in the first person, but Young has taken that barrier and crushed it. He also has the high distinction of being only the second author to ever make me cry - the other being my favorite fantasy author, Terry Brooks. It's damned hard to get my tears to flow, and for Young to have been able to do just that is an extremely high compliment to his writing.
My favorite books are ones that leave you contemplating for hours after you've finished. Soledad is exactly that. Days after I turned the last page, I'm still mulling over the events, deceits, and implications from a wonderfully crafted story that has left me yearning for more.
I would recommend Soledad to anyone and give it FIVE STARS! Get off your butt and get yourself a copy today!
