This was an exciting book with a well-crafted storyline. Leibenguth did a wonderful job writing about a scenario our descendants might very well face - a time when Earth is destroyed by humankind. The author beautifully created a story of suspense designed to make readers consider the implications of their actions, while at the same time inserting a fantastical twist sure to delight fans of sci-fi and fantasy. Everything was neatly resolved at the end with just enough left open to leave the reader's imagination free to soar into the characters' futures.
The difficulty in reviewing this book, and the reason for the three star rating, is the frequent and numerous punctuation and grammatical errors. Many times, plural was used instead of possessive (Lords instead of Lord's) and wrong words were consistently used ('too' instead of 'to' and 'isle' instead of 'aisle'). Tenses were also frequently changed, many times within the same sentence or paragraph. A short example is two sentences from a paragraph in Chapter 9, Kindle location 567: 'I honestly wanted to turn away. I have a sinking feeling in my stomach of what's about to come, and it's my fault...'
These issues would be easily fixed with an editor. None altered the storyline or character development, but the frequency of so many consistent, small errors became annoying and detracted from the reading experience of what would otherwise be a 5-star book.
Overall, 'Juniper' is a well crafted and thought-provoking read that I would recommend to lovers of sci-fi/fantasy and anyone concerned about our planet's future.
A dead Earth, a new planet, and a thousand years into the future, the Human race needs rescuing again…
Exasperated, I turned away from my bedroom window as Earths constant shadow casts the grim reminder. My parents are dead, and at eighteen years old, I have two younger sisters and the entire Human race to protect on my own.
Suddenly, my thoughts are interrupted by the familiar vibrations flooding the air around me, and hearing the desperation in my sister Piper’s voice as she screams… “Juniper!” I knew ‘they’ had arrived… Once again, the Dark Lord has sent several of his Lemoyh Warriors to make their attempts at destroying me as I’m a symbol of strength for the Human race and a constant threat. My ability transcends the average Human, and the Dark Lord should have learned by now, I will not surrender myself, my sisters or my people… I will not be the one on the receiving end of the bloodied sword…
NOT today… NOT ever!
